Better twelve good than fourteen evil
Twelve is better than fourteen is bad. Yesterday I messed up with a double page spread (how does this sound). I like to make the pages or visualize them two by two, because when you turn a page, even if we don’t like it, you see the next two and although the reader does his part and focuses his attention on the panels in order of reading, what he sees is a double page.
I had decided to work on two of the first pages of the story. They consist of a drawing that encompasses the two and two panels on the second page. It features people from the street, who have no relevance in the story, but who accompany the protagonist’s meditations.
I made each drawing twice, but when I put them together, to visualize how they worked together, I wasn’t convinced. Today I didn’t know whether to start with another new page or give it another turn. I think it would have been a mistake to go ahead with new pages, because these pages told me that there was a problem and I couldn’t turn my back on it because that same problem was going to be repeated in subsequent pages. What happened is that they were very «dirty». You couldn’t understand anything, all the characters in the scene had the same presence. You didn’t know where to look. In the end I decided to give less presence to the secondary ones, indicating to the reader where the important thing is. It also allows me to play with very beautiful spots that, without being defined, are understood in their context.
